Task Corps, Better Targeted Career Training and Improved Pre-enrollment Information Might Boost Female Residential Trainee Recruitment and Retention

Established in 1964, Job Corps is the nation’s biggest property, academic, and profession training program for economically disadvantaged youths. Administered by the Dept. of Labor (Labor), Task Corps got about $1.6 billion in program year 2007 and served about 60,000 trainees. This report examined the: (1) degree to which Job Corps centers are operating at or near capacity for domestic trainees; (2) major aspects that affect the recruitment and retention of domestic trainees, particularly women; and (3) actions, if any, Labor has actually taken to deal with the recruitment and retention of residential trainees.
