Quebec postpones English school board elections – again – due to pandemic
For the second time in as many months, the Quebec government has postponed English school board elections due to the pandemic.
In September, the Coalition Avenir Québec government insisted the elections would go ahead as planned on Nov. 1, despite the pandemic and concerns expressed by English boards.

In October, the elections were indeed postponed, with the government setting a Dec. 20 voting day. English boards again complained about the plan to hold an election amid the pandemic.
Today, the Education Department announced via press release that the elections are again being suspended “to ensure that school elections take place safely in the context of COVID-19 and to respect the moral contract proposed by the premier of Quebec for the holiday season.”
No new date was provided, “but given the highly unpredictable nature of the pandemic, the government is considering postponing its holding for several months,” the government said.

Opposition says CAQ government promised too much for Christmas, can’t deliver
Opposition parties at the legislature today accused the Legault government of being too hasty in its desire to loosen COVID-19 pandemic restrictions for Christmas.
Premier François Legault “could not resist making a nice controlled presentation where he played the role of Santa Claus handing out the gifts,” Parti Québécois parliamentary leader Pascal Bérubé told reporters.

Quebec reports 1,464 new cases, 32 deaths as hospitalizations rise
Quebec reported its biggest one-day increase in cases of the second wave today, with hospitalizations also on the rise.

“There is an increase in cases and hospitalizations across Quebec,” Health Minister Christian Dubé said via Twitter.
“This increase shows that the battle is far from won and that the virus is still present. We must continue to respect (public health) measures and limit our contacts if we want to curb the spread of the virus.”
Quebec has recorded 1,464 new cases of COVID-19, according to today’s provincial update.
The regional breakdown of cases shows that they are on the rise in most parts of Quebec.
Thirty-two new deaths were reported, including eight over the past 24 hours. Another 19 deaths occurred between Nov. 19 and 24, while five occurred before Nov. 19.
Twenty more people are in hospital with COVID-19, for a total of 675.

Among those in hospital, 90 are in intensive care – three fewer than the previous day.
On Tuesday, Quebec conducted 33,023 tests. That’s the last day for which screening data is available.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Quebec has reported 136,894 cases and 6,947 deaths linked to COVID-19.

PQ blasts Legault for rushing festive break plan
Opposition parties are continuing to hammer the Coalition Avenir Québec government over its holiday plan.
Yesterday, they accused Premier François Legault of muddled communication, a day after he had to change the number of gatherings that will be permitted around Christmas.
This morning, Parti Québécois parliamentary leader Pascal Bérubé said Legault should further clarify by issuing a written “moral contract,” Philip Authier reports from Quebec City.
