From bathing to dressing, even consuming, daily licensed nursing assistant Dershay Brown takes care of patients by assisting them with everyday tasks. “My task is essentially to supply patient care, to make sure they are comfy, they have what they require,” stated Dershay Brown, a licensed nursing assistant with Lee Health.

At Health Park Medical Center, Dershay works closely with nurses and physicians to make certain clients receive the care they need. “As quickly as I get in, we get our assignment; we gather to do a shift change where they inform us what we are doing, and what’s going on with the client. We do rounding where we go into the client’s space, present ourselves, and get a little info to get us began for the night,” she discussed.

CNA’s are licensed in CPR and First Aid. In addition to patient care, they’re trained in how to take important signs, urine samples, and record patient development and medical details. “I have the ability to sit down with my client and actually speak to them, and they feel good about it later,” stated Dershay.

CNA’s can get their license through a six-week program– teaching them about medicine and client care. “We do classwork, which is learning the body, discovering how to deal with clients, learning the laws of nursing, then we go into medical training, where they teach us how to hands-on care with the patients to provide safe care,” she stated.

Like Dershay, many CNA’s continue their education to become a signed up nurse. “As a CNA you can enter into LPN, you can go into RN, you can do house health,” said Dershay.

A career that provides growth, hands-on training, and intimate time looking after clients in the health center or a nursing home. “It feels great to go home and say I helped somebody today; I made them feel good today,” stated Dershay.
