Becoming a nurses aide can be one of the most rewarding careers that you may ever find. Why you may ask? Because a nurses aide is like being a patient’s family member. The nurses aide spends more quality time with the patient then the nurse or even the patient’s family. The patient becomes very close to the nurses aide and feels secure when they are around. The amount of love and gratitude that patients feel when they are cared for by a compassionate CNA knows no measure. No matter how much the CNA gives to their patients, the patients always give more back. Thus the rewards that come with being a CNA cannot be compared to satisfaction from any other job. Because the truth is that nurses aides help their patients live longer.
Though many people think that a nurses aide must work in a long term care facility for the elderly, that is not completely factual. The certified nursing assistant can work at hospitals and urgent cares as well as in the long term care facilities. The CNA can work on the pediatric floor, or the neurology floor, even the OB/GYN floor with mothers and babies.
The nurses aide is trained to help everyone of any age. Their job is to promote the patient’s health and well being, caring for them in the most personal ways, such as bathing, dressing, combing their hair and helping to feed them.
While being a nursing assistant is not for everyone, those who wholeheartedly embrace this profession usually go on to become nurses and physicians due to the level of satisfaction that they find in their job by helping others. Any nurse will tell you that a good CNA is like gold. Being a nursing assistant means being a team player. That means the CNA will be working side by side with physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers. The nursing assistant spends their day attending to their patients needs according to the specified tasks delegated to them by their nurse in charge. The nurse is charge is the registered nurse. Their job is to delegate to both the licensed practical nurse and the nurses aide.
Tasks that may delegated include providing partial baths, feeding, changing their bed clothes, dressing the patient, providing nail care, combing their hair, shaving and being their companion. These daily living skills help the patient with their restorative care. The key to good patient care is to help the patient if possible, return to their home and to be self sufficient. When working in the hospital, the goal of the nurses aide is to care for the patient for short term goals. While in the long term care facilities, the goal are more long term, since many of the residents take longer to heal with advancing age.
